Religious Studies Experts Launch News Website for Journalists and Students

Denver, CO March 1, 2004--In response to a lack of global coverage of religion, a student-initiated project with oversight by faculty has been launched from the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Dernver.

The website at http://www.religionscope.com provides a daily integrated, news-oriented site showing the many types of presence and influence that religion has on the contemporary world. Topics include, but are not limited to, the relationship between religion and politics, ethics, art, science, and cults/new religions.

Fast-breaking news stories about religion are organized according to geographic region as well.

Religionscope is not affiliated with any religious organization, denomination or belief, which the project developers feel would compromise their integrity. It is edited and produced by professionals with advanced academic training in religious studies.

The website is intended for use by journalists, academics, and students who seek a convenient and quickly accessible "thumnail" of significant news about religion that is happening daily in a world context.

"Our goal is to provide journalists and researchers with information regarding religious issues, as well as to discern and pinpoint trends within modern religious affairs," says Francis Sanzaro, an M.A. degree candidate in the Department of Religious Studies who, along with his faculty advisor, maintains the site . "For its depth of coverage and accessibility for high-quality, intelligent news, the site is sure to be a success," says Sanzaro.

Sanzaro has a background in media and journalism.

A unique feature of the site is a linked weblog called "Religionscope Blog" at http://radio.weblogs.com/0131035/. The "blog" allows readers to comment on key stories in the news. It is also intended to encourage dialogue and promote a more active role in the shaping of media reporting on religion.
